SAC Arts presents…a monthly online exhibition

Ryan Callis

A Californian native, a fourth generation painter and a third generation surfer, my artistic practice is heavily anchored in those three aspects of my personal history.

Hard Edge abstraction, the Light and Space movement in Los Angeles, the finish fetish gloss and bright colors of 60’s surf and car culture mixing with the Ferus Gallery artists on La Cienega and in Venice Beach, and the California Impressionist movement with its emphasis on light and gesture are all huge influences on my work. I mostly paint waves these days, abstractions of those very abstract forms that fill me with wonder and awe.

I want to make paintings that make the viewer want to stop and contemplate for a while. Some kind of visual party that happens on a static 2-D surface. Hopefully it works out sometimes.
